The fertilizer component also helps to green up the lawn quickly, giving it a healthier appearance. It’s often used in spring and fall for optimal weed and feed results. Trade-offs Some users have noted that it can be a bit potent, so avoiding application directly on flower beds and sensitive ornamental plants is important to prevent damage. It's also best to apply when temperatures are moderate, or you might see some temporary stress on the grass. Top Pick2. Scotts Liquid Green Max Lawn FoodWhile this option focuses more heavily on feeding your lawn with a strong dose of iron for deep greening, it also includes ingredients that help prevent and control certain types of weeds. It's a great choice if your primary concern is a vibrant, healthy lawn that can outcompete weeds by itself. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it This formulation is excellent for homeowners seeking to achieve a deep, rich green color in their lawn quickly, thanks to its high iron content. It’s also formulated to work on any grass type and offers supplemental weed control, making it a versatile choice for overall lawn health and appearance. Key specs NPK Ratio: 2-0-0 (Nitrogen dominant for greening). Key Ingredient: High iron content to enhance green color. Container Size: 32 oz. Coverage: Up to 2,000 sq. ft. Application Method: Hose-end sprayer. Real-world experience Verified buyer feedback frequently highlights the rapid greening effect, often visible within days. Some users have reported improvement in weed suppression over time, especially when used consistently throughout the growing season alongside regular mowing. This product is also a strong contender if you're looking for a solution similar to what kind of fertilizer for grass to use for a quick boost. Trade-offs While it helps with weed control, it might not be as aggressive on established, tough weeds compared to products specifically designed for heavy weed eradication. It's important to follow application instructions carefully to avoid temporary staining on hard surfaces. Best Budget3. Spectracide Weed & Feed 20-0-0For those keeping an eye on their budget without sacrificing effectiveness, Spectracide’s offering is a solid choice. It’s designed to kill common broadleaf weeds and feed your lawn, all in one convenient spray. The QuickFlip Sprayer is a nice touch for ease of use. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it This Spectracide product stands out for its affordability and dual-action formula, making it an excellent value for maintaining a weed-free and fertilized lawn. The inclusion of a pre-attached sprayer streamlines the application, which is a significant advantage for users who prefer not to deal with separate equipment. Key specs NPK Ratio: 20-0-0 (high nitrogen for growth). Active Ingredients: 2,4-D, Triclopyr, Quinclorac for weed control. Container Size: 32 fl. oz. (offered in multi-packs). Coverage: Up to 5,000 sq. ft. per unit. Application Method: Integrated QuickFlip Sprayer. Real-world experience Aggregate user reviews often cite success against common invaders like dandelions, chickweed, and clover. The quick-flip sprayer design is frequently praised for reducing setup time and making application straightforward. This product is a good example of how to get granular weed control without needing a separate spreader, much like the discussions around hoes to get rid of garden weeds. Trade-offs While effective on many broadleaf weeds, it may require repeat applications for particularly stubborn or mature weeds. It's also important to note that the 20-0-0 NPK ratio means it's heavily focused on nitrogen, so other nutrients might need to be supplemented if your soil test indicates deficiencies. 4. Sunday Weed & Green + LiquidSunday offers a more integrated approach, combining pre-emergent and post-emergent weed control with lawn fertilization. This kit is designed to tackle not just existing weeds but also help prevent new ones from sprouting, offering a more comprehensive and longer-lasting solution for lawn care. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it This product is a standout because it offers a dual approach to weed management, tackling both existing weeds and preventing new ones from germinating. The included fertilizer also ensures your lawn receives vital nutrients for healthy growth, making it a comprehensive solution for a thriving yard. This fits nicely into the framework of what fertilizer to use in spring at your garden, but for lawns. Key specs Fertilizer Ratio: 22-0-2 (balanced nitrogen and potassium). Weed Control: Pre-emergent and post-emergent action. Target Weeds: Dandelion, crabgrass, and other common broadleaf weeds. Container Size: 64 oz. concentrate (makes up to 5,000 sq. ft.). Application Method: Requires a hose-end sprayer (not always included). Real-world experience Verified buyer feedback often praises this product for its effectiveness against tough weeds like crabgrass and its contribution to a visibly greener lawn. The pre-emergent aspect is frequently highlighted as a key benefit for long-term weed prevention, providing a more proactive lawn care strategy. Trade-offs The concentrate formula requires mixing with water, and a separate hose-end sprayer is typically needed, which adds a step compared to ready-to-spray options. Some users have noted that exceptionally dry conditions can impact its effectiveness, emphasizing the importance of proper watering. 5. Scotts Liquid Turf Builder Lawn FertilizerThis Scotts product is specifically designed to act as a lawn fertilizer, providing essential nutrients to your grass, but it doesn't directly target weeds. If your primary concern is feeding and strengthening your lawn to make it more resilient against weed invasion, this is a strong contender. It works by feeding and watering your lawn simultaneously at the root level. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it This liquid fertilizer is included because a healthy, well-fed lawn is often the best defense against weeds. It delivers nutrients directly to the grass roots and helps improve overall lawn density, which can naturally crowd out some weed species. It’s a great option if you prefer to address potential weed issues by strengthening your turf first, aligning with the principles of what is the best lawn fertilizer. Key specs NPK Ratio: Varies by specific product version, but focuses on feeding. Container Size: 32 fl. oz. (often sold in 2-packs). Coverage: Varies, typically up to 5,000 sq. ft. per bottle. Application Method: Hose-end sprayer. Primary Benefit: Lawn fertilization and strengthening. Real-world experience Users report a noticeable improvement in lawn color and vigor after application, leading to denser turf. This denser growth can make it harder for weeds to establish themselves. This aligns with the general understanding of how to fertilize lawns effectively, similar to when to fertilize lawn for best results throughout the year. Trade-offs This product does not contain any herbicides, so it won't actively kill existing weeds. If your lawn has a significant weed problem, you'll need to use a separate weed killer or choose a dedicated weed and feed product. How I picked To find the best liquid weed and feed for lawns, I started by looking at the core needs of homeowners: effectively controlling common lawn weeds and providing essential nutrition for healthy grass. My evaluation process involved analyzing product formulations, understanding active ingredients, and cross-referencing manufacturer claims with aggregate user feedback. I focused on several key areas: Weed Efficacy: How well does the product tackle broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clover, and crabgrass? Does it offer both pre-emergent and post-emergent control? Fertilizer Performance: What is the NPK ratio, and does it provide the necessary nutrients to promote dense, green turf? Does it contain micronutrients like iron for enhanced color? Application Ease: Is it a ready-to-spray formula, or does it require mixing? Does it come with a convenient sprayer, or is one needed separately? Safety and Lawn Type: Is it safe for all grass types? Are there any specific application restrictions or precautions for use around pets or children? Value: Does the coverage area and price point offer good bang for your buck? I deliberately avoided products with questionable ingredient lists or those that lacked transparent information about their formulation. I didn't test long-term durability beyond the typical application season, focusing instead on immediate and expected results based on user reports and scientific principles of lawn care. Buying guide — what actually matters for best liquid weed and feed for lawns When you’re out shopping for a liquid weed and feed, it’s easy to get overwhelmed by all the options. Let’s break down the key things that truly make a difference for your lawn. Understanding Weed Types and Control Not all weeds are created equal, and neither are weed killers. Most liquid weed and feed products target broadleaf weeds like dandelions, clover, and plantain. If you’re dealing with grassy weeds (like crabgrass, which is a major headache), you’ll need a product specifically formulated to handle them. Some products offer both pre-emergent control (stopping weeds before they sprout) and post-emergent control (killing weeds that are already growing), which is ideal for comprehensive lawn care. Fertilizer Ratios and Nutrient Needs The "feed" part of weed and feed is crucial for a healthy lawn. Look at the NPK ratio on the bag or bottle: Nitrogen (N) promotes green, leafy growth; Phosphorus (P) aids root and flower development; Potassium (K) helps with overall plant health and stress tolerance. For lawns, a higher nitrogen content is generally beneficial for that lush green look. Many products also contain iron to boost greening and other micronutrients. If you're unsure about your soil's specific needs, a soil test is a great starting point, much like understanding compost vs fertilizer. Application Methods: Sprayer Savvy Liquid weed and feed comes in two main forms: ready-to-spray and concentrates. Ready-to-spray bottles attach directly to your garden hose and mix automatically as you spray, making them super convenient. Concentrates need to be mixed with water in a separate container or a specialized hose-end sprayer. While concentrates can sometimes be more economical and offer better control over mixing ratios, ready-to-spray options are fantastic for ease of use, especially if you're just starting out. Grass Type Compatibility Most liquid weed and feed products are safe for common lawn grasses like fescue, bluegrass, and ryegrass. However, it's always wise to check the label if you have more sensitive grass types or are unsure. Applying a product not suited for your lawn species can lead to discoloration or damage. If you’re unsure what kind of fertilizer to use for grass, the product’s label is the best place to start. Timing is Everything When you apply a weed and feed product matters a lot. Many are most effective in the spring and fall when weeds are actively growing but temperatures are moderate. Applying during extreme heat can stress your lawn, and applying when it’s too cold might render the weed killers ineffective. Always follow the product's instructions regarding the best time of year and the ideal temperature range for application, especially when considering when to fertilize lawn. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Can I use liquid weed and feed on a new lawn? Generally, it’s best to wait until new grass has been mowed at least three to four times before applying any weed and feed product. Applying too early can interfere with the establishment of healthy grass seedlings. Always check the specific product's label for age recommendations for new lawns. How long until I see results from liquid weed and feed? Results can vary depending on the product and the types of weeds present, but you should start seeing visible signs of weed control within a few days to a week. The fertilizing aspect usually leads to a greener lawn within 48 hours. For the best long-term results, follow the application schedule recommended on the product. Is liquid weed and feed safe for pets? Most liquid weed and feed products are safe for pets once they have completely dried on the lawn. It’s crucial to keep pets off the lawn during application and until the product has dried to prevent any accidental ingestion. Always read and follow the safety precautions on the product label regarding pets and children. Can I apply liquid weed and feed if it’s going to rain soon? It’s best to apply liquid weed and feed when rain isn’t expected for at least 24 to 48 hours. Rain too soon after application can wash the product off the weeds before it has a chance to work effectively. Conversely, some products require light watering after application to activate the nutrients, so always check the label. Will liquid weed and feed kill all types of weeds? Most liquid weed and feed products are formulated to kill common broadleaf weeds. They may not be effective against grassy weeds or certain very persistent perennial weeds. If you have a specific or widespread weed problem, you might need a more targeted herbicide or a product specifically designed for those types of weeds. Do I need a special sprayer for liquid weed and feed? Many liquid weed and feed products come in ready-to-spray bottles that attach directly to your garden hose. These are very user-friendly. If you purchase a concentrate, you will need to buy a separate hose-end sprayer or a tank sprayer to mix and apply the product. Final verdict For a reliably green and weed-free lawn, the Scotts Liquid Turf Builder Plus 2 is hard to beat, consistently performing well against a wide array of weeds while feeding your grass right. If a vibrant, deep green is your top priority and you want a strong lawn to naturally outcompete weeds, the Scotts Liquid Green Max Lawn Food is an excellent choice. For those mindful of their budget, the Spectracide Weed & Feed 20-0-0 offers effective dual action at a great value. Affiliate disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.
