The 16-inch deck is maneuverable, making it easy to navigate around flower beds and obstacles common in home lawns. The lighter weight also means less fatigue during mowing sessions. Top Pick2. EGO POWER+ Electric Lawn MowerThe EGO POWER+ 21-inch self-propelled mower is a powerhouse that makes tackling St. Augustine grass a breeze. Its wider cutting deck and self-propelled feature mean you spend less time pushing and more time enjoying a beautifully manicured lawn. The 7.5Ah battery offers substantial runtime, often enough for a full mow on medium to large yards. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it This EGO mower delivers fantastic cutting performance and makes yard work significantly easier with its self-propelled function and long-lasting battery. It’s a top-tier choice for anyone prioritizing efficiency and a quality cut on thicker grasses like St. Augustine. The self-propelled system is smooth and responsive, reducing the strain of mowing, especially on slopes. The larger cutting path significantly cuts down the time spent on the lawn. Trade-offs It's definitely an investment, and the battery, while powerful, takes a few hours to fully recharge. It's also a bit heavier than smaller electric models, though the self-propel feature mitigates this in practical use. Best Budget3. PowerSmart EasyGlide 21-Inch Gas Lawn MowerIf you prefer the sheer power of gas and are looking for a budget-friendly option, the PowerSmart EasyGlide is a solid contender for St. Augustine grass. Its 144cc engine provides ample torque to cut through thick turf, and the 21-inch deck helps cover ground efficiently. It’s a no-frills workhorse that gets the job done. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it This mower offers a substantial cutting width and engine power at a very accessible price point, making it an excellent budget choice for St. Augustine lawns that require a bit more grunt. The 3-in-1 system offers versatility for grass clipping management. It’s a straightforward machine that’s good for basic lawn maintenance. Trade-offs It requires standard gas mower maintenance, including oil changes and spark plug checks. It’s also a push mower, so you’ll be doing all the work of propelling it, which can be tiring on larger or sloped yards. 4. SKIL PWR CORE 40 Brushless 40VThe SKIL PWR CORE 40 is a compelling option for those who appreciate modern battery technology and excellent cutting power. It features a brushless motor for sustained performance and a self-propelled function that makes mowing less of a chore. The larger 6.0Ah battery means you can tackle a good portion of your yard on a single charge. 🛒 Check on Amazon Why I picked it SKIL’s PWR CORE 40 system offers a robust battery platform with impressive power delivery, making it a great choice for homeowners who want reliable electric performance for tougher grasses like St. Augustine. Key specs Voltage: 40V Cutting Width: 20 inches Battery: 6.0Ah (included) Features: Brushless motor, Self-propelled with variable speed, Push-button start, LED headlights Runtime: Up to 70 minutes on a 6.0Ah battery Real-world experience Verified buyers note the strong torque from the brushless motor, which helps maintain cutting speed even in thicker grass. The self-propelled system is appreciated for reducing user fatigue on yards with any inclines, and the included rapid charger gets you back to mowing quicker than some competitors. Trade-offs While it comes with a substantial 6.0Ah battery, it is still a battery-powered mower at its core, so very large or extremely dense lawns might push its limits or require a second battery. The 20-inch deck, while good, is not as wide as some self-propelled options. 5. BLACK+DECKER Weed Eater Lawn Edger CordlessWhile not a traditional mower, the BLACK+DECKER 3-in-1 Cordless Lawn Edger and Mower combo offers a unique solution for smaller lawns or precise trimming needs, especially with St. Augustine grass where maintaining edges is crucial. Its ability to switch between mowing, trimming, and edging offers unmatched versatility for small properties where storage space might be limited. Key specs System: 40V MAX* Cutting Width: 12 inches (mower deck) Included: (2) 2.0Ah batteries, charger Features: Converts to string trimmer, edger, and mower; adjustable length and height Runtime: Approximately 20 minutes per battery in mower mode Real-world experience Many users find this to be a great solution for small patios, townhouses, or areas where a full-sized mower is impractical. The string trimmer and edger functions are reported to be effective for detailing around flower beds and pathways, complementing the light mowing capability. Trade-offs The 12-inch mower deck is quite small, making it impractical for anything beyond the smallest lawns. Runtime in mower mode is also limited, necessitating frequent battery swaps or longer charging periods. It's best suited for light touch-ups rather than primary lawn maintenance. How I picked When I set out to find the best mowers for St. Augustine grass, I focused on a few key areas that really make a difference with this turf type. First off, the cutting deck size and its ability to provide an even cut without scalping were paramount. St. Augustine can grow pretty dense, so I looked for mowers with enough power to handle that without bogging down. I also considered the weight and maneuverability, especially for push mowers. St. Augustine can spread into thick mats, and a lighter mower or one with self-propel greatly reduces user fatigue. For battery-powered models, the battery life and charging time were crucial factors, you don’t want to be halfway through your yard and run out of juice. Finally, I paid attention to user feedback regarding how well each mower performed on grass types similar to St. Augustine, looking for consistent reports of clean cuts and ease of use. I evaluated each on three benchmarks: cutting performance on dense grass, user-friendliness, and overall value for their price point. I didn't test long-term durability beyond 60 days of typical use, but relied on aggregated user reviews and manufacturer specifications for indications of longevity. Buying guide — what actually matters for best lawn mower for st augustine grass When you're picking a mower, especially for a specific grass like St. Augustine, a few things really rise to the top. It’s not just about getting the grass cut; it’s about doing it in a way that keeps your lawn healthy and looking its best. Cutting Deck and Blade Quality For St. Augustine grass, you want a mower that can provide a clean, even cut. This often means looking for a deck that’s designed for good airflow and blades that are sharp and well-balanced. A 16 to 21-inch cutting deck is usually a sweet spot for most residential lawns. If your lawn is larger, you might consider a wider deck to save time, but remember that maneuverability can decrease with size. A deck that allows for multiple cutting height adjustments is also crucial, as St. Augustine prefers a slightly higher cut (around 3.5 to 4 inches) to stay healthy and prevent scalping. Power Source: Gas vs. Electric This is a big one and often comes down to personal preference and your yard's specific needs. Gas Mowers: They generally offer more raw power, which can be beneficial for very thick or wet St. Augustine grass. You don't have to worry about battery runtime, and refueling is quick. However, they require more maintenance (oil changes, spark plugs, fuel stabilizer) and produce emissions and noise. Electric Mowers (Corded & Cordless): Cordless electric mowers are increasingly powerful and much quieter. They offer ease of use with push-button start and less maintenance. The key considerations are battery voltage (higher is generally more powerful) and Amp-hour (Ah) rating (higher means longer runtime). For St. Augustine, a 40V or higher system with at least a 4.0Ah battery is a good starting point. You'll need to manage charging times. Self-Propelled vs. Push Mowers If you have any inclines in your yard, or if your St. Augustine grass grows particularly thick, a self-propelled mower can be a lifesaver. These mowers drive themselves forward, reducing the physical effort significantly. You control the speed, and it makes mowing much less strenuous. Push mowers, while typically less expensive and lighter, require you to provide all the propulsion. For a dense, spreading grass like St. Augustine, the ease of a self-propelled model is often worth the extra investment. Weight and Maneuverability St. Augustine grass spreads by runners, creating a dense mat. This can make mowing a bit more challenging. A mower that's too heavy or difficult to turn can frustrate you. Look for models with well-designed wheels, smooth bearings, and, as mentioned, the self-propel feature if you anticipate needing help with the physical push. For electric mowers, the placement of the battery can sometimes affect the overall weight distribution and handling. Grass Clipping Management: Mulch, Bag, or Side Discharge Most mowers offer at least two of these options, and some three. Mulching: Chops grass clippings finely and returns them to the lawn as natural fertilizer. This is great for St. Augustine, as it returns nutrients to the soil. You’ll need to mow more frequently to avoid clumping. Bagging: Collects clippings in a bag for disposal. This is useful if you want a very tidy look or if your grass is very long and wet, preventing clumps from forming. Side Discharge: Shoots clippings out the side. This is quick but can leave windrows of grass if not managed carefully. Battery Technology (for electric mowers) If you're going electric, the battery is everything. Look for lithium-ion batteries, as they offer better power density, longer life, and faster charging compared to older technologies. The voltage (V) indicates the power, while the Amp-hour (Ah) rating indicates runtime. For larger lawns or thicker grass like St. Augustine, aim for higher Ah ratings. Some systems even allow you to daisy-chain batteries or use multiple batteries simultaneously to extend your mowing session. Warranty and Durability A good warranty can offer peace of mind. Most reputable lawn mower brands offer warranties ranging from 2 to 5 years on the mower itself and often a similar or longer period on the battery for electric models. The build quality, especially the deck material (steel is common and durable) and overall construction, will contribute to how long your mower lasts. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) What is the best cutting height for St. Augustine grass? St. Augustine grass generally prefers a slightly higher cut, typically between 3.5 and 4 inches. This higher mowing height helps to shade the soil, which discourages weed growth and keeps the grass roots cooler during hot weather, promoting a healthier, more resilient lawn. Always ensure your mower can be set to these heights and that you're not cutting more than one-third of the grass blade at a time to prevent stress. How often should I mow St. Augustine grass? The frequency of mowing depends on the growing conditions and how fast your St. Augustine grass is growing. During the peak growing season (typically spring and summer), you might need to mow once a week. In cooler or drier periods, you may be able to mow every 7-10 days. It's best to mow when the grass reaches about 5-6 inches in height, then cut it down to your desired height (3.5-4 inches). Can I use a mulching mower on St. Augustine grass? Yes, absolutely! Using a mulching mower is actually beneficial for St. Augustine grass. The finely chopped grass clippings return vital nutrients back to the soil, acting as a free, natural fertilizer. This helps to keep your lawn healthy and vibrant. Just be sure to mow regularly to avoid letting the grass get too long, which can lead to clumping if not mulched properly. This practice aligns well with general lawn care advice regarding returning organic matter to the soil, similar to using compost. Are electric mowers powerful enough for St. Augustine grass? Modern electric lawn mowers, especially those with higher voltage (40V or more) and brushless motors, are indeed powerful enough for St. Augustine grass. These mowers provide ample torque to cut through dense turf without bogging down. While very thick, wet grass might still challenge some electric models, advancements in battery technology and motor efficiency have made them a viable and often preferred alternative to gas mowers for many homeowners. What should I look for in a self-propelled mower for St. Augustine grass? When choosing a self-propelled mower for St. Augustine grass, prioritize a system that allows for speed adjustment. This lets you match the mower's pace to your walking speed and the grass's density. Look for models with a robust transmission that can handle the extra load of propelling the mower, especially if you have any slopes or uneven terrain. A wider cutting deck (20-21 inches) on a self-propelled mower can also significantly reduce mowing time. Final verdict For St. Augustine grass, getting the right mower means balancing power, maneuverability, and a clean cut. The EGO POWER+ Electric Lawn Mower stands out as the top pick due to its impressive self-propelled action, substantial cutting width, and long-lasting battery life, making it ideal for effectively managing this dense turf without exhaustion.
